Sliding the whole graph of y = f(x) to the right by p means every point now needs a smaller input to reach the same height — so we substitute (x − p), not (x + p). Vertical shifts don't have this problem: adding q outside the function moves the output directly, in the same direction as the sign. Watch for this pattern across every question below.
